Not happy with your Twitter user name? Just change it!

by Lars Tong Strömberg on October 5, 2009

Made a small discovery today that made me a bit happy – it is possible and easy to change user name for an existing Twitter account! You probably have experienced it so many times just like I have: Changing the password is something you can often do easily, but changing the user name in applications is usually a lot trickier, quite often not even possible. So when you find yourself in need of making this kind of change and it is implemented perfectly and immediately works, I think it is worth mentioning.

I already had two Twitter accounts and have focused on one of them posting in English. However, as I felt it would be nice to sometimes tweet also in Swedish, – especially to make public comments in Swedish without mixing the languages up for those who follow me and only are proficient in English, I decided to start using that other Twitter account I already had up and running in parallel.

The problem I thought I would encounter was the user name for that second account which I was not completely happy with. When I registered it in the first place, I was in a hurry and did not think it through. Therefore it was great to note how quickly and easy one can change user name in Twitter. Just change it and check availability on the fly in the Account tab in Settings and you are done!

So if you have an existing Twitter account with lots of followers and tweets and you are not entirely happy with the user name, there is no need to start all over with a completely new account, just try change the user name in Settings.

Here is Twitter´s own support page on changing the user name with a full, detailed explanation of how you can change user name and the difference between your real name and your user name in Twitter.
